Multiple sources confirm that the population of female prisoners is rapidly increasing in the United States. The population now far exceeds one million prisoners (Bloom Covington, 2008) (Lewis, 2000). It is pertinent to recognize the group of female offenders with mental illness; they are a group that is seldom considered when pondering societal groups relating to communication. Through substantial research, several issues that ail this community have been distinguished and can be connected to communication, as this work will reveal. Some of these issues include the reality of self-harm, histories of sexual and physical abuse, and aggressive behavior. Through the review of literature related to female prisoners with mental health†¦show more content†¦Lord, the author of â€Å"The Challenges of Mentally Ill Female Offenders in Prison.† Lord discusses the need for attention to be directed toward inmates suffering from mental illness. The journal notes that many reactiv e signs of some mental illness may include self-harm, rule breaking, and aggression, which can lead to segregation in prison rather than treatment for mental illness. Lord emphasizes the need for special settings or programs and treatment to accommodate the mentally ill (Lord, 2008). Unfortunately minimal data exists about the current prevalence of psychiatric disorders ailing the large population of female prisoners with mental health issues, other than data from years in the past. Lewis explains that the lack of current data impacts the difficulty of addressing the various needs of inmates through the development of new programs (Lewis, 2000). Many of the journal articles within this review address treatment for female inmates with mental health needs. Literature Review Addressing Mental Illness It has already been established that the prison population for female offenders is growing, but the complexity of the population is changing as well. Special populations make up the group of female offenders, specifically including middle-aged inmates, physically ill inmates, and of course mentally ill inmates (Lewis, 200). Early in my undergraduate education I became interested in both developmental and quantitative psychology. I initially became interested in developmental psychology by learning about the impact that childhood events can have on adult life. My passion for quantitative psychology came after I enrolled in my Psychological Methods class. This inspired me to expand my knowledge of statistics and go outside the psychology department to enroll in Linear Regression, Analysis of Variance and other advanced statistics courses. I gained the ability to run statistical analyses in multiple packages such as R, SAS, and SPSS. These classroom experiences along with applied research and evaluation experience culminated with me wanting to obtain a Ph.D. in†¦show more content†¦My work experience has also being a great asset to my research knowledge. I have worked at UC Davis in the evaluation/research field for 3 years in two capacities: as a student assistant at the Center for Education and Evaluation Services and currently as an Evaluation Analyst for the iAMSTEM Hub. As a student assistant, I prepared data for analysis via data cleaning and statistical diagnostic tests. I collaborated on building statistical models to assess program effectiveness, as well as collaborating on both evaluation reports and publications. Now as an Evaluation Analyst, I am working on the program evaluation for an NIH grant; working with repeated measures and qualitative coding. I work with large longitudinal data sets to answer various research questions for departments across UCD, often utilizing multilevel modeling to account for the nested structure of the data as well as applying propensity score analysis to make better predictions of non-randomized studies. This work in the research field has solidified my drive for pursuing a Ph.D., in order to advance my career and obtain my goal of becoming a researcher in an academic setting. I would like my research to be cross-disciplinary, pulling from both developmental and quantitative psychology. Putting down on paper all the emotions going through ones head is a way of re-living and remembering the overwhelming emotions they grapple with throughout their lives. Poet Michelle Williams states that: humans have always grappled with overwhelming emotions. Throughout history e have expressed these emotions In many ways, such as through song, music, dance, art and poetry This Is true because putting on paper emotions such as hurt and betrayal, unrequited love, and loss and suffering; emotions that many great poets portray in their work, helps unburden the mind and the heart. The three poems that will be analyses In this essay to further prove the above quote are London by William Blake, England in 181 9 by Percy Shelley and I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsmith. These poems were written in the early Romantic Period, often called the age of revolutions due to the occurrence of the American and the French revolutions. This was a time period characterized by upheavals in political, balancing, and social conventions, which lead to writers communicating colossal feelings they had felt around this period Into their work. The poem London by William Blake proves Michelle Williams statement because Blake expresses the emotion of passionate anger to reveal the difficult connections between ownership and the ruling ideology. In the first stanza, Blake is talking about how he is walking through every street. The adjective chartered seems to imply the value of money to live everyday in this ephemeral world, where everything Is focused around money, richness and its value to reach anything. But, in despite of the role that money has in the world and happiness because of its value, many people are dominated by sorrow and sadness. The lines In every cry of every man and In every infants cry of fear are examples of this fact. People are not happy. In this poem Blake expressed the feeling of frustration and sadness through tone in his words, about people living In fear all the time. Another poem that proves Michelle Williams statement is England in 181 9 by Percy Shelley. Shelley has done this by writing a political poem of Englands condition at the time and his experience through arrogance of power and unjustness towards the people. The line rulers who neither see, nor feel, nor know are Lord Liverpool and his conservative cabinet. In calling them leeches that are bleeding their country, Shelley is indulging in hyperbole. They were men of integrity who happened to be in power at a time of general unrest caused by the unemployment and hunger that repertory, inevitable arrests and repressive measures. Shelley observations of England at the time lead him to express his overwhelming emotions in hope of possibility of liberty through poetry. The last poem that proves Michelle Williams statement is l Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsmith. The dejected and pitiful feeling that is passed on all through this poem embodies Wordsmiths dynamic definition of poetry as emotion recollected in tranquility. Wordsmith uses imagination to contemplate and celebrate the wonders of nature. This is made known in the concluding stanza of the memo: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils. This stanza returns to the solitude of the lonely wondering cloud. However, the poet has been changed by his imaginative experience involving the daffodils and the accompanying bay waters. Loneliness is now a peaceful solitude.
